The race was brought forward by three hours due to severe weather concerns around Miami, creating a chaotic atmosphere before lights out. Max Verstappen spun on the opening lap after battling Antonelli and Charles Leclerc into Turn 1, immediately shaking up the order. An early Safety Car followed after crashes involving Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson and Pierre Gasly. From there, strategy became crucial. Norris briefly led, but Antonelli regained track position through the pit cycle and then resisted heavy pressure for the remainder of the race. The closing stages of the race were full of drama. Oscar Piastri passed Charles Leclerc to claim the final podium position, before Leclerc spun on the final lap and fell further down the order. Max Verstappen and George Russell both took advantage of the incident to gain places in the closing moments.

The 2026 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka delivered a dramatic and pivotal race, headlined by a stunning victory for rookie Kimi Antonelli. Despite losing ground at the start from pole position, the young Mercedes driver capitalised on a perfectly timed safety car period to regain track position and take control of the race. The safety car was deployed following a heavy, high-speed crash involving Oliver Bearman, which became one of the defining moments of the race. Behind Antonelli, Oscar Piastri produced an impressive drive to secure second place, marking his first podium of the season, while Charles Leclerc completed the top three after fending off late pressure. Elsewhere, George Russell struggled with issues and strategy finishing in P4, and Max Verstappen endured another difficult outing under the new regulations leaving him in P8. The race not only showcased strategic drama and unpredictability but also signalled the arrival of a serious new title contender.
